Calculate California sales tax
Your checkout receipt shows a local sales-tax rate, and you need to decide whether the tax and total are consistent with the transaction address. This calculator provides an estimate for that comparison.
Enter the taxable purchase amount shown on the receipt and the combined percentage for the transaction address. Because sales tax rates vary by location and effective date, confirm the sales tax rate for the transaction before using the calculator.
Purchase amount: $________
Sales tax rate: ________%
Estimated tax: Purchase amount × entered rate
Estimated total: Purchase amount + estimated tax
Use the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) rate lookup to find the specific rate by address. The CDTFA administers California sales and use taxes.
California Taxes is independent and is not a state government website.
What does the result mean?
The result is an estimate of the amount added to the entered purchase price. The estimated sales tax depends on the taxable purchase amount and the entered percentage.
The purchase amount should include only taxable sales. The percentage should reflect the combined California state tax, county tax, city tax, and special-district tax charges that apply to the transaction.
A lower or higher result depends on three variables: the taxable amount, the transaction address, and the applicable combined rate. The calculator does not determine whether an item is taxable or which sourcing rule controls the sale.
Treat the result as a purchase estimate, not a sales tax return calculation.
See the calculation method below to review how the estimate is produced.
How is California sales tax calculated?
In everyday terms, the calculator applies the entered percentage to the taxable purchase amount. The tax term for this percentage is the combined sales tax rate.
It appears on the checkout receipt and in the CDTFA rate lookup for the transaction address.
California sales tax is calculated by multiplying the taxable sales amount by the combined tax rate expressed as a decimal. This sales tax calculation assumes that the entered amount contains only taxable sales.
Sales tax = taxable sales amount × (sales tax rate ÷ 100)
Total = taxable sales amount + sales tax
Here is the California-specific part: the California state tax rate is one layer. County tax, city tax, and special-district tax can change the combined rate for a specific address.
Use the rate assigned to the transaction address instead of a rate from a nearby city.
The calculator rounds the final sales tax estimate to the nearest cent. The worked example shows each calculation step.
Worked example
Example: Assume a $100 taxable purchase, an 8.75% combined sales tax rate, tax year 2026, and a transaction address confirmed through the CDTFA rate lookup. Filing status is not applicable to this sales tax example.
- Convert the sales tax rate: 8.75% ÷ 100 = 0.0875.
- Calculate the tax: $100 × 0.0875 = $8.75.
- Calculate the total: $100 + $8.75 = $108.75.
For comparison, assume the same $100 taxable purchase in tax year 2026 occurs at another transaction address with a verified 7.25% combined sales tax rate. Filing status remains not applicable.
The purchase produces $7.25 in sales tax and a $107.25 total. The $1.50 difference results from the location-specific combined rate.
The transaction address and effective date determine which combined rate to enter.
Verify the transaction address and effective date through the CDTFA rate lookup before recording or collecting sales tax.
The methodology identifies the source date and limitations behind this example.
Methodology and limitations
This tool uses the standard multiplication method and relies on the user-entered rate. It does not maintain its own sales tax rates.
The primary source is the CDTFA’s state-administered California city and county sales and use tax rates, effective July 1, 2026, with source data listed as updated April 1, 2026.
Rates can change because a city, county, or special district can adopt or revise a charge. An address can also fall within a special district or an unincorporated area.
The estimate excludes taxability rules, exemptions, use tax distinctions, marketplace obligations, shipping treatment, refunds, and filing adjustments.
The FAQ closes with the checks to make before acting on the estimate.

How accurate is the calculator?
The arithmetic is accurate for the amount and percentage entered. The sales tax estimate depends on using the correct taxable amount and the combined rate that applies to the transaction address on the transaction date.
Does the calculator find my local rate?
No. Use the CDTFA address-based rate lookup to identify the applicable combined rate before calculating tax.
Are my entries stored?
This page does not claim to store, transmit, or retain entries. Review the site privacy policy before entering sensitive information into any online calculator.
What should I do next?
Compare the estimate with the checkout receipt. Verify the transaction address, combined rate, and effective date through the CDTFA rate lookup.
Consult a qualified adviser when the item’s taxability or the transaction’s sourcing is uncertain.
